PSRTI Executive Director III Dr. Almeda joined the Philippine delegation at the United Nations Statistical Commission (UN Stats) 56th Session in New York City from March 4-7, 2025. Accompanied by key officials from the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), including Undersecretary Dennis Mapa, PhD, OIC Deputy National Statistician Minerva Esquivias, Assistant National Statistician Kristine Briones, and Assistant National Statistician Marizza Grande, the delegation represented the country in discussions on statistical advancements and global data initiatives.

With the theme “Better Data, Better Lives,” the session focused on critical topics such as economic statistics, governance data, and climate change statistics. The discussions underscored the importance of high-quality and timely data in shaping policies, monitoring economic progress, and addressing environmental challenges. Countries shared best practices and strategies to improve data collection, transparency, and accountability in support of sustainable development goals.
The UN Statistical Commission, the highest decision-making body for global statistical activities, oversees the development of international statistical standards and methodologies. Comprised of 24 member countries, the commission ensures equitable global representation and supports the enhancement of national statistical systems to meet evolving data demands.
As an active member of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP), the PSRTI contributes to statistical capacity-building initiatives across the region. PSRTI supports statistical training programs that strengthen governance data frameworks and advance evidence-based policymaking in close coordination with UNESCAP.
Dr. Almeda’s participation in the session reaffirms the Philippines’ dedication to international statistical standards and its commitment to leveraging data for sustainable development.
