PSRTI conducts the first two batches of Basic Statistics 1: Descriptive Statistics for the DOST

The Philippine Statistical Research and Training Institute (PSRTI) conducted the first two batches of the virtual training course on Basic Statistics 1: Descriptive Statistics for the technical staff of the DOST central and regional offices on May 4-6, 2022. The course is the first installment of the four-course capacity building program lined up for the department.

Mr. George Ringo S. Manapat of the School of Statistics of the University of the Philippines Diliman is the resource person for Batch 1 with 36 training participants from Regions I, III, IVB, VI, VII, VIII, IX, X, CAR, Caraga, and Central Office. Batch 2, on the other hand, has Professor Rocky T. Marcelino of the Institute of Statistics of the University of the Philippines Los Baños, with 33 participants from Regions I, II, IVA, IVB, V, VI, XI, XII, NCR, and Central Office.

The Joint Opening Ceremonies of the virtual training kicked off with the welcome remarks of the PSRTI agency head Executive Director III, Dr. Josefina V. Almeda. Her welcome message was followed by the opening message of the director of the Planning and Evaluation Service of the DOST, Dir. Cezar R. Pedraza. After these messages, the introduction of the participants, course overview, and introduction of the resource persons and training coordinators followed.

The training course consisted of lecture videos, hands-on activities, discussions, and workshop exercises. The topics discussed revolved around the basic concepts of statistics, methods of data collection and presentation, analysis and interpretation of results, and construction of charts using MS Excel.

The 3-day training ended with another Joint Closing Ceremonies that included impressions from selected participants and from the resource persons of the two batches. The feedback included the general opinion that the training was, “very well-organized and the time allotted was just right”. Other positive feedback include, “the lecture is not too overwhelming”, the training being “a very good crash course and refresher course” and, “the planning, design, and execution of the virtual course was highly commendable’’. The participants also appreciated how they were encouraged to actively engage in the discussions. The resource persons were very knowledgeable and made statistics appear as an easy subject. They were very hands-on and patient in explaining all the topics.

There was also a general consensus that… “The training team was very accommodating, prompt, and efficient, the materials and reminders were readily provided, and excellent coordination skills” .

Ms. Jomel Jhele T. Sadsad, Senior Statistical Specialist of the Training Division who represented the PSRTI Executive Director Dr. Josefina V. Almeda, ended the activity with a closing remarks and shared the strengthened collaboration efforts with the DOST in capacitating all the technical staff in statistical data analysis for evidence-based decision making.
