The Philippine Statistical Research and Training Institute (PSRTI) in coordination with the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) and the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), holds the eighth batch of its Seminar 2 customized training course on Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) under the Five-Year Research and Training Program for the Philippine Statistical System to Measure the Sustainable Development Goals.

The SDG Seminar 2 series, with the theme “Effective Tools in Presenting and Analyzing SDG Data Amidst the COVID-19 Pandemic”, and conducted virtually on Sept 8-10, following the New Normal adapted by government agencies in response to the COVID-19 Pandemic. Participants are the last set delegates from the Southwestern Tagalog Region of the provinces of Marinduque, Occidental Mindoro, and Oriental Mindoro. They are joined by representatives from the DILG MIMAROPA and other DILG Field Offices, as well as by PSA MIMAROPA and its Field Offices.

PSRTI Executive Director Josefina V. Almeda, PhD, DILG Regional Office MIMAROPA Assistant Regional Director Rey S. Maranan, CESO V, and PSA MIMAROPA Regional Director Leni R. Rioflorido, welcomed the participants. This was followed by the SDG Overview by Ms. Maria Praxedes R. Pena, Chief Statistical Specialist of the PSRTI Training Division. Afterward, Ms. Jomel Jhele T. Sadsad, Senior Statistical Specialist of the PSRTI Training Division, gave an introduction to Basic Concepts and the Textual and Tabular Presentation of Data.

For the second day, Ms. Jazel Ann G. Ramos, Statistical Specialist I of the PSRTI Training Division, continued the discussion of Effective Presentation of Data with a lecture on the Graphical Presentation. In the afternoon session, Ms. Kristine Honey M. Villa, Statistical Specialist II of the PSRTI Training Division, led the participants in a hands-on demonstration and exercise in the creation of charts using MS Excel.

The third day of the seminar was allocated for the lectures on Descriptive Statistics given by Ms. Jomel Jhele T. Sadsad and Mr. Jose Pedro E. Cuartero, Project Development Officer on Contract Service of the PSRTI Training Division. Mr. Cuartero also led the hands-on session on Descriptive Statistics.

For the closing program, Ms. Ranel S. Castillo, of LGU Buenavista, Marinduque, Mr. Emerito R. Cristalino LGU Abra de Ilog, Occidental Mindoro, Mr. Ronaldo P. Perez of LGU San Teodoro, Oriental Mindoro, Ms. Lea Rosario M. Clementa of DILG Marinduque, and Ms. Gemma N. OPIC of PSA Marinduque, gave their impressions on the general organization of the training program, the resource persons, Zoom as a platform, the topics, and the training team. The seminar was formally closed by Executive Director Josefina V. Almeda, PhD.

Several participants commended the training design of the seminar, particularly on how PSRTI made it interactive, well-managed, and expertly-handled, such that the same should be adopted by other agencies. The resource persons were noted to be knowledgeable about their topics and contributed to the active online interaction between facilitators and participants. Some mentioned that the seminar was a good refresher, while some participants expressed that they acquired new learnings in the preparation and presentation of their data. Overall, the topics were said to be informative and useful, and they cannot wait to share their learnings with their colleagues.

The SDG Seminar 2: Effective Tools in Presenting and Analyzing SDG Data Amidst the COVID-19 Pandemic is the follow-through activity from the 2019 SDG Seminar I series. For the year 2020, the Seminar 2 series aims to cover all provinces, cities, and municipalities under the Regions III (Central Luzon), VI (Western Visayas), VIII (Eastern Visayas), MiMaRoPa Region, and National Capital Region.
