The Philippine Statistical Research and Training Institute (PSRTI) conducted its Regular Training Course on Basic Statistics 1: Descriptive Statistics. This was held on August 9-12, 2021, with 33 participants from the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA).

The resource persons all came from the Training Division, namely, Senior Statistical Specialist Christopher E. Mojica, Statistical Specialist II Kristine Honey M. Villa, Statistical Analyst Brad Earvin T. Zuñiga and Project Development Officer Jose Pedro E. Cuartero. Each of them handled the course topics outlined and assigned to them during the training.

The range of topics include an introduction to statistics, a run through on the different methods of data collection, a discussion on data presentation techniques and summary measures. The lectures were paired with either a hands-on activity or an individual/group workshop. The workshops and hands-on activities on MS Excel guided the participants through step-by-step demonstrations, which also allowed them to practice or apply the concepts discussed in the lectures.

On the final day of the training, impressions from selected participants mentioned that they enjoyed and appreciated the training. In fact, one participant added that, “The whole training course leaves you wanting more, and makes learning about statistics more fun and interesting.” Generally, the participants stated that they were able to brush up on old statistics lessons and learn new techniques, and helpful tips and tricks along the way.
