Director Almeda attends 54th Session of UNSC in NY

Executive Director III Josefina V. Almeda, Ph.D. joined the seven-member team of the Philippine Delegation to the 54th session of the United Nations Statistical Commission (UNSC) held in New York City from February 28 to March 3, 2023.

The 54th session with the theme, “Better Data, Better Lives,” featured several discussions, sessions, and meetings with Chief Statisticians and other officials from member-states worldwide.

Director Almeda served as a panel member for the Global Network of Institutions for Statistical Training (GIST) special side event on, “What are NSOs doing to lead national efforts to increase data literacy?”

Other items under the agenda for the said event include data and indicators for the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, business and trade statistics, regional statistical development, environmental-economic accounting, and statistical capacity development. The PSRTI Director emphasized the mandate of the agency in spearheading statistical capacity building in the Philippines.

The Philippine delegation is headed and represented by Undersecretary, National Statistician, and Civil Registrar General of the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), Dennis S. Mapa, Ph.D. Director Almeda is his alternate representative, together with OIC and Deputy National Statistician Divina Gracia L. del Prado, Ph.D. of the PSA. Advisers of the Philippine team include Assistant National Statistician Kristine Joy S. Briones, Regional Directors Cynthia L. Perdiz and Atty. Maqtahar L. Manulon, and Chief Statistical Specialist Mark C. Pascasio, all from the PSA.

The United Nations Statistical Commission was established in 1947 and is the highest decision-making body for international statistical activities of the global statistical system. The 54th Session is also the first held in person since the start of travel restrictions brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, with the 51st being the last previously held in-person session.
