The Philippine Statistical Research and Training Institute (PSRTI), in coordination with the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) and the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), held the ninth batch of its Seminar 2 customized training course on Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) under the Five-Year Research and Training Program for the Philippine Statistical System to measure the Sustainable Development Goals.
The SDG Seminar 2 series, with the theme “Effective Tools in Presenting and Analyzing SDG Data Amidst the COVID-19 Pandemic”, was done virtually on September 22-24, 2020, following New Normal practice in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The seminar was attended by delegates from the Eastern Visayas provinces of Biliran, Southern Leyte, and Eastern Samar. They were joined by representatives from the DILG Region VIII and DILG Field Offices in the same provinces. Mayor Raffy S. Asebias of Quinapondan, Eastern Samar also made a quick virtual visit during the 3-day activity.
PSRTI Executive Director Josefina V. Almeda, PhD, welcomed the participants and provided an introduction of the PSRTI. This was followed by the SDG Overview by Ms. Maria Praxedes R. Pena, Chief Statistical Specialist of the PSRTI Training Division. Afterwards, Ms. Jomel Jhele T. Sadsad, Senior Statistical Specialist of the PSRTI Training Division, presented an introduction on Basic Concepts and the Textual and Tabular Presentation of Data.
For the second day, Ms. Jazel Ann G. Ramos, Statistical Specialist I of the PSRTI Training Division, continued the discussion of Effective Presentation of Data with a lecture on the Graphical Presentation. In the afternoon session, Ms. Kristine Honey M. Villa, Statistical Specialist II of the PSRTI Training Division, led the participants in a hands-on demonstration and exercise in the creation of charts using Microsoft Excel.
The third day of the seminar was allocated for the lectures on Descriptive Statistics, given by Ms. Sadsad and Mr. Jose Pedro E. Cuartero, Project Development Officer, also of the PSRTI Training Division. A hands-on session on the Descriptive Statistics was also facilitated by Mr. Cuartero.
For the closing program, selected participants gave their impressions of the seminar. These are from Ms. Ma. Natividad B. Castanares of Libagon, Southern Leyte, Ms. Rudith Roca of DILG Region VIII, and Ms. Joyce Bernadette B. dela Cruz, an additional delegate from LGU Quezon City, NCR. The seminar was formally closed by ED Josefina V. Almeda, PhD.
One participant had remarked the following in their seminar evaluation: “Attending this seminar has made me realize the importance of processing and analyzing timely collected data well help to better respond proactively and perhaps in recommending appropriate actions especially during emergencies. Honestly, some of those I am already using but it is only now I fully understand how to make use of those and even the excel, the shortcuts you taught us in making charts is amazing to me. I have been using charts but I find it more friendly this time.
“This is what we really need to innovate our work to make our lives a lot easier having such multifarious task we are faced each day being a one man-office. Online training is actually new to us in fact I learned a lot and made me appreciate technology better especially during this pandemic. To all the resource speakers you are all great. Thank you so much to the new learnings you have imparted to us on this webinar.”
The SDG Seminar 2: Effective Tools in Presenting and Analyzing SDG Data Amidst the COVID-19 Pandemic is the follow-through activity from last year’s SDG Seminar I series. For the year 2020, the Seminar 2 series aims to cover all provinces, cities, and municipalities under the Regions III (Central Luzon), VI (Western Visayas), VIII (Eastern Visayas), MIMAROPA Region, and National Capital Region.
