The Philippine Statistical Research and Training Institute (PSRTI) in coordination with the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) and the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), holds the seventh batch of its Seminar 2 customized training course on Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) under the Five-Year Research and Training Program for the Philippine Statistical System to Measure the Sustainable Development Goals.

The SDG Seminar 2 series, with the theme “Effective Tools in Presenting and Analyzing SDG Data Amidst the COVID-19 Pandemic”, and done virtually following the New Normal adapted by government agencies in response to the COVID-19 Pandemic, saw participants coming from Southwestern Tagalog Region, specifically Palawan and Romblon. They are joined by representatives from the DILG Romblon and other DILG field offices, as well as by PSA Palawan.

PSRTI Executive Director Josefina V. Almeda, PhD, DILG Regional Office MIMAROPA Regional Director Wilhelm M. Suyco, and PSA MIMAROPA Regional Director Leni R. Rioflorido, welcomed the participants. The SDG Overview was given by Ms. Maria Praxedes R. Pena followed by the introduction on the Basic Concepts in Statistics and discussion on the Textual and Tabular Presentation of Data by Ms. Jomel Jhele T. Sadsad, Chief Statistical Specialist and Senior Statistical Specialist, respectively of the PSRTI Training Division.

For the second day, the discussion of Effective Presentation of Data with a lecture on the Graphical Presentation was given by Ms. Jazel Ann G. Ramos, while hands-on demonstration on selected graphs using MS Excel was conducted by Ms. Kristine Honey M. Villa. The former is a Statistical Specialist I and the latter is a Statistical Specialist II of the PSRTI Training Division.

The third day of the seminar was allocated for the lectures on Descriptive Statistics by Ms. Sadsad and Mr. Jose Pedro E. Cuartero, Project Development Officer under Contract Service arrangement, of the PSRTI Training Division. Mr. Cuartero also gave a short hands-on demonstration for computing Descriptive Statistics using MS Excel. For the afternoon session, Assistant National Statistician Wilma A. Guillen of the PSA Social Sector Statistics, gave an update on the SDG by discussing the Measures on Tracking Progress of the SDGs. Lastly, Ms. Charity V. Agbayani, Local Government Operations Officer V of the DILG Bureau of Local Government Development shared with the participants a lecture on Community-Based Monitoring System (CBMS) and updates on the current status of the CBMS.

For the closing program, Mr. Chan Alsad of LGU Balabac, Palawan, Mr. Derrick Mayor of the LGU Sta. Fe, Romblon, and Ms. Aleza Refe of DILG Looc, Romblon gave their impressions on the general organization of the training program, the resource persons, Zoom as a platform, the topics, and the training team. The seminar was formally closed by Executive Director Josefina V. Almeda, PhD.

Despite the challenges faced by some of the participants from unstable internet connections, they still found the training seminar to be very well-organized and the knowledge gained and skills acquired to be satisfactory. Participants rated the competency of the resource persons to be very satisfactory, which contributed to positive comments for the lectures as being comprehensive and easy to understand. The topics and hands-on workshops were said to be made simple for easy understanding of all participants. The trainers were also noted to be accommodating and very patient in ensuring that, true to the goals of the seminar and of the SDGs, no one is left behind.

The SDG Seminar 2: Effective Tools in Presenting and Analyzing SDG Data Amidst the COVID-19 Pandemic is the follow-through activity from last year’s SDG Seminar I series. For the year 2020, the Seminar 2 series aims to cover all provinces, cities, and municipalities under the Regions III (Central Luzon), VI (Western Visayas), VIII (Eastern Visayas), MiMaRoPa Region, and National Capital Region.
