The PSRTI, in partnership with UN Women and the United Nations Statistical Institute for Asia and the Pacific (UNSIAP), hosted the National Training of Trainers (TOT) on Gender Statistics for Monitoring the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the PSRTI Conference Room on November 4-8, 2024.

With Resource Persons Ms. Sinovia Moonie (UNSIAP), Ms. Sneha Kaul (UN Women), Ms. Chang Tsz Yu (UN Women), and PSRTI Executive Director III Josefina V. Almeda, PhD, the training aimed to enhance the technical and didactical skills of resource persons in the Philippines, equipping them to design and deliver gender statistics training. This initiative supports the country’s commitment, under the Magna Carta of Women and the Philippine Statistical Act of 2013, to address gender data gaps and improve data quality for informed policymaking. It was attended by 51 participants, including representatives from state and private universities, the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), the Philippine Commission on Women (PCW), and PSRTI. Notable attendees included two PSA regional directors, underscoring the significance of this endeavor.

Dr. Almeda delivered the opening remarks during the Opening Ceremonies, followed by a special message from PCW Chairperson Ermelita V. Valdeavilla.

The course featured modules on gender data literacy, SDG monitoring, and data communication using the Gender Statistics Training Curriculum developed by UN Women. The curriculum emphasized hands-on learning through Microsoft Excel for data analysis and fostered engagement with activities like Q&A, group exercises, and innovative tools like Kahoot. On the second day, a special networking event allowed participants to connect and build collaborative relationships.

The TOT empowered participants with comprehensive skills in gender statistics, curriculum mastery, and effective training delivery, marking another step toward reducing dependence on regional or international trainers, ensuring a sustainable national pool of trainers in gender statistics.

Dr. Almeda concluded the program with her closing remarks. A special message from UN Women Philippines Country Programme Coordinator Ma. Rosalyn G. Mesina was shared through a letter read during the ceremony.
The success of this training underscores the collaboration between PSRTI, UN Women, and UNSIAP in driving progress toward achieving gender equality and advancing the Sustainable Development Goals through data-driven insights.
