UNESCAP partners with PSRTI for statistics workshop for international statistics offices

The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) partnered with the Philippine Statistical Research and Training Institute (PSRTI) to conduct the Regional Workshop on the Utilization of R for Statistical Business Processes, held from April 8-18, 2024, at the Ceferino S. Sinsioco Room within the PSRTI premises in Quezon City. The workshop saw participation from twenty-four (24) delegates representing statistical offices in Bangladesh, Bhutan, Kyrgyzstan, Maldives, Mongolia, Nepal, and the Philippines.

Esteemed Resource Persons, including Ms. Xian Ji of UNESCAP, Prof. John Carlo Daquis from the University of the Philippines School of Statistics (UPSS), Dr. Marcello D’Orazio from the Italian National Institute of Statistics (IStat), and representatives from the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) – Ms. Ella May Bereña, Mr. Abdulbasit Abdulsamad, Ms. Desiree Robles, and Ms. Quindale Caraos, delivered comprehensive insights into various facets of R, a programming language acclaimed for statistical computation and data visualization.

The Opening Ceremonies, held on April 8, commenced with the opening remarks by Dr. Dennis Mapa, the Philippines’ National Statistician, conveyed on his behalf by Director Benjamin Arsenio Navarro.

Participants commended the Resource Persons for their profound expertise and lauded the expeditious dissemination of training materials via cloud storage, facilitating enhanced comprehension and retention. The meticulous planning and proactive facilitation exhibited by the training team were also commended, which fostered an environment conducive to focused learning. The attendees also expressed keen anticipation in applying the acquired knowledge to fortify their respective statistical business processes.

The final day featured a visit to the PSA premises, culminating in a convivial gathering and the formal conclusion of the workshop through the Closing Ceremonies. Certificates of Appreciation were extended to the Resource Persons for their invaluable contributions, alongside Certificates of Completion conferred upon all participants. Closing remarks were delivered by NS Mapa, PSRTI Executive Director III Dr. Josefina Almeda, and Ms. Olga Shipina, a UNESCAP representative, expressing gratitude to the collective efforts of the training team, Resource Persons, and attendees, underscoring their dedication that enabled the success of the event.
